What is off-grid solar?

Off-grid solar systems generate electricity from solar panels and store the energy in batteries, allowing you to use solar power without depending on the electricity grid.
This is the configuration to choose when grid electricity is unavailable, unreliable or difficult to access at the site. Instead of feeding a grid connection, the system's job is to keep a defined set of loads running around the clock using what it generates and stores during the day.
Because everything runs from your own generation and storage, off-grid design is more about honesty than ambition: we work out exactly what has to run, for how long, and size the panels and battery bank around that reality.

In an off-grid system, the battery is not an accessory — it is what makes the system usable after sunset. Its capacity determines how much energy you can carry into the evening and through a dull day.
We size storage around three things: the loads you actually need to run, the number of hours you need them, and the margin you want for consecutive cloudy days. We will always tell you honestly what a given battery capacity can and cannot support rather than overstating backup duration.

What you should consider
Before you commit to off-grid
- Batteries are the recurring cost. Unlike on-grid, storage will eventually need replacement — plan for it in your long-term thinking.
- Every extra load costs twice. Adding appliances means more panels and more battery, so define your essential loads clearly.
- Consecutive dull days matter. The design should include margin, and we will tell you what that margin costs.
- If you have a usable grid connection, hybrid usually gives better value than pure off-grid — you get backup and bill reduction.

Questions about running independently of the grid
An off-grid system operates independently and does not use the electricity grid at all. A hybrid system also has battery backup, but stays connected to the grid so it can draw from it or reduce your bill. If you have a grid connection and want savings plus backup, hybrid is usually the better fit.
That depends entirely on the battery capacity and what you connect to it. Backup duration is a design decision — we size the battery bank around your essential loads and the number of hours you need them to run, then explain the trade-off between capacity and cost.
Generation falls, so the battery bank carries more of the load and recharges more slowly. Off-grid systems are therefore sized with some margin, and we discuss realistic expectations for consecutive dull days during the survey.
It depends on the starting current and running load of the equipment, and on the inverter and battery capacity. Heavy inductive loads need to be accounted for in the design — tell us what you intend to run and we will factor it in.
We provide both lead-acid and lithium options depending on the application, required capacity, space and budget. Lithium offers longer cycle life, efficient charging and a compact design; lead-acid remains a lower-cost option for some applications.
